Demand for Air Freight increases in first and second quarters of 2021

In both the first and second quarters of 2021, the total air freight capacity carried increased significantly.

Schiphol Airport is responsible for 93% of the air freight transported in the Netherlands. A total of over 426,000 tons of cargo was handled in Q2 of 2021. An increase of over 39% compared to the same period last year.

The remaining air cargo in the Netherlands was handled at Maastricht Aachen Airport. The weight processed at Maastricht, nearly 30,000 tons, decreased by over 18% compared to the same period a year earlier.

For years, most air cargo has been traded with Asia, especially China. That has not changed with the introduction of the Covid-19 anti-counterfeiting measures. In the second quarter of 2021, 77 thousand tons of goods were traded with China, up 7 percent from the same period a year earlier and plus over 4 percent compared to the second quarter of 2019.
